FCE Essay Writing: Mastering the Content Criterion

1 Understanding the Content Criterion

Today we’re exploring what ‘Content’ really means in Cambridge assessment. The content criterion focuses on how well your writing fulfills the task requirements and communicates with the target reader. Think of it as answering the question: ‘Have you said everything you needed to say, and said it well?’

Examiners specifically look for:
– Complete task fulfillment: addressing all bullet points comprehensively
– Relevant information: avoiding irrelevance and staying focused on the task
Adequate development: supporting your ideas with sufficient detail
– Clear purpose: ensuring the target reader is fully informed

Many students mistakenly believe that simply writing enough words is sufficient, or that including sophisticated vocabulary automatically leads to high content marks. However, the content criterion is about the substance of your writing – what you say, not how you say it.

Key Terms

content criterion
The assessment category that evaluates how well a piece of writing addresses all task requirements
task fulfillment
The extent to which a response addresses all parts of the writing task
target reader
The intended audience for the piece of writing
adequate development
Sufficient explanation and support for ideas presented

2 Example of Weak Content

In your English class you have been talking about social media. Now your English teacher has asked you to write an essay.

Write an essay using all the notes and give reasons for your point of view.

Should teenagers be allowed unlimited access to social media?

Notes:
– Effects on studying
– Social relationships
– Safety concerns

Write your essay in 140-190 words.

Teenagers and Social Media

Nowadays everyone uses social media all the time. I think it’s good because you can talk to friends and see what they are doing. Sometimes I spend many hours looking at TikTok videos and Instagram posts.

When I’m studying, I keep checking my phone because I don’t want to miss anything important. My parents say I should focus more on homework but social media is part of life now. Everyone does it.

I have lots of friends online and we chat every day. Some people say it’s dangerous but I think they just don’t understand modern life. Old people always complain about new things.

Sometimes I stay up very late watching videos. It’s fun and interesting. My teacher says we shouldn’t use phones in class but everyone does it anyway.

In conclusion, I think social media is good for teenagers and we should use it whenever we want.

Key Terms

irrelevance
Information that does not directly relate to the task requirements
omission
Something important that has been left out
development
The way ideas are explained and supported with details

3 Reflection Questions

Before we look at some expert analysis in our next session, take some time to consider:

– Looking at Maria’s response, what specific content problems prevent it from achieving Band 5 excellence? Consider how thoroughly she addresses the required bullet points.

– Which elements are missing or inadequately developed in Maria’s content that need to be addressed? Think about the depth of discussion for each topic.

– What are the most serious content failures you can identify in Maria’s writing? Focus on relevance and task fulfillment.

– How could Maria’s response be improved to demonstrate the content sophistication expected at B2 level?
