CAE Essay Writing: Mastering the Language Criterion

1 Understanding the Language Criterion

Today we’re exploring what ‘Language’ really means in Cambridge assessment. This crucial criterion evaluates your lexical sophistication and grammatical range, focusing on how effectively you can deploy advanced language features.

Examiners are specifically looking for linguistic flexibility – your ability to express complex ideas with precision and natural fluency. At C1 level, you need to demonstrate mastery of less common vocabulary, sophisticated grammatical structures, and appropriate register awareness.

What sets Language apart from other criteria is its focus on the technical quality of your writing rather than its organization or communicative impact. Common misconceptions include thinking that using ‘fancy words’ alone is enough – in reality, examiners want to see natural, accurate usage of advanced language features integrated smoothly into your writing.

Key Terms

lexical sophistication
advanced and precise use of vocabulary
grammatical range
variety of complex grammatical structures
linguistic flexibility
ability to express ideas in multiple ways
register awareness
understanding of formal vs informal language

2 Example of Weak Language Use

Essay Question: Some people believe that university education should be free for all students. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Nowadays, lots of people think university should be free for everyone. I think this is a good idea because education is very important in our modern world. When people have to pay for university, it makes things very hard for them.

Firstly, when university costs money, many students can’t go. They have to work instead of study or they get big loans that they must pay back for many years. This is not good because it stops people from getting education they want. Also, some people’s families are poor and can’t help them pay.

Secondly, free university is good for society. When more people can study, they get better jobs and make more money. This helps the economy and makes the country better. Also, educated people can solve problems better and help make the world better.

On the other hand, some people say free university costs too much money for the government. But I think the government should find the money because education is very important. Maybe they can use money from other things that are less important.

In conclusion, I strongly believe university should be free for everyone. The good things about free university are bigger than the problems it might cause. Education is a right that everyone should have.
