FCE Essay Writing: Mastering the Language Criterion
1 Understanding the Language Criterion
Today we’re exploring what ‘Language’ really means in Cambridge assessment. This crucial criterion evaluates your linguistic competence across two main areas: vocabulary and grammar.
Examiners are looking for evidence of lexical range – your ability to use varied and appropriate vocabulary, including less common words and idiomatic expressions. They also assess your grammatical control, checking how accurately you can handle both simple and sophisticated structures.
What sets Band 5 excellence apart is the ability to demonstrate natural collocation patterns and maintain consistent accuracy even while using complex language. Minor slips are acceptable, but errors should never impede communication.
Many students mistakenly believe that using fancy words guarantees high marks. However, examiners value precise, well-chosen language over unnecessarily complex vocabulary. They’re looking for writing that shows both range and control, with appropriate register awareness and effective use of cohesive devices.

Task: In your opinion, should schools ban mobile phones?
In your opinion, should schools ban mobile phones?
Nowadays, lots of students bring their phones to school. Some people think this is bad and others think it’s good. I will write about this topic.
Firstly, phones are very bad for concentration. When students have phones, they don’t listen to teacher and play games. Also they write messages to friends. This makes learning very difficult.
Secondly, phones can be good things too. If there is emergency, students can call parents. And some apps are good for study, like calculator and dictionary. But most students don’t use phones for this.
In my opinion, schools must ban phones because the bad things are more than good things. Students can’t focus good with phones and this is very important problem. Maybe they can bring phones but give to teacher in morning and get back after school finishes.
To conclude, I think phones should not be allowed in schools because they make problems for learning.
