Section 1. Maria’s Original Writing

Here’s Maria’s original writing that we’ll be analyzing today:

I went to this place last week with my friends and it was ok I guess. The sound system was quite good but the drinks were really expensive!!! The staff wasn’t very nice to us and we had to wait ages to get served at the bar which was really annoying.

The toilets were dirty and the place needs painting badly. Also the music was too loud and you couldn’t hear yourself think. My friend Sarah said she wouldn’t come back here again.

The tickets cost £25 which is way too much money for what you get. The support band was rubbish and the main act started really late. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone unless they fix these problems. In conclusion its not worth going here because there are better places in town.

Section 2. My Analysis

Let me walk you through the main problems in Maria’s writing. The review lacks proper organization and a consistent register. Phrases like ‘ok I guess’ and ‘rubbish’ are too informal for a published review.

The excessive exclamation marks (‘!!!’) and personal references (‘my friend Sarah’) reduce the review’s credibility.

Maria’s content covers relevant aspects like facilities, atmosphere, and value for money, but needs more balanced evaluation.

The conclusion is abrupt and doesn’t effectively summarize the key points.

Section 3. Corrected Version

The Sound Box Music Venue: A Disappointing Experience

Having recently visited The Sound Box, I found the venue to be somewhat underwhelming despite its potential. While the sound system delivers good quality audio, several aspects of the facilities require significant improvement.

The venue’s main drawbacks include poorly maintained washrooms and walls in need of repainting. Although the acoustics are professional, the excessive volume levels make conversation impossible, detracting from the overall atmosphere. The bar service is particularly problematic, with long waiting times and rather unhelpful staff.

At £25 per ticket, the venue does not offer satisfactory value for money. The disappointing support act and delayed start of the main performance further reduced the evening’s entertainment value. Until these issues are addressed, it would be difficult to recommend The Sound Box to potential visitors.

Section 4. Teaching Commentary

Let me highlight the key improvements. Regarding Content, I’ve maintained all crucial evaluation points while adding specific details about facilities and atmosphere. For Communicative Achievement, I’ve replaced informal expressions like ‘ok I guess’ with more appropriate phrases like ‘somewhat underwhelming.’ Organisation  follows a clear three-paragraph structure with proper topic sentences and cohesive devices. For Language, I’ve incorporated more sophisticated structures like ‘having recently visited’ and appropriate collocations like ‘satisfactory value for money.’

These changes demonstrate the level of writing proficiency Cambridge examiners expect at B2 level.
