Sarah recounting the amazing rescue story to visitors at the Bracciano Lake dog park a week after the incident
Short Story
I still can’t believe what happened at the lake last week with my dog Peggy. She’s usually such a good swimmer, but that day was different. The weather was perfect, and we were enjoying a quiet morning at Bracciano Lake. Peggy, my energetic border collie-setter mix, was having the time of her life, running along the shore and playing in the shallow water.
Everything was fine until Peggy saw some ducks far out on the lake. Before I could stop her, she started to swim after them. I called her name, but she just kept going. She swam out too far, much farther than ever before. I started to worry when I saw her struggling in the water. She was getting tired, and I could hear her scared bark.
I was about to jump in to help when something amazing happened. A large white swan that lived on the lake started to paddle toward Peggy. At first, I thought, ‘Oh no, the swan might attack her!’ But I couldn’t believe my eyes when the swan gently moved beside her. Instead of chasing Peggy away, the swan stayed close to her.
The most incredible part was what happened next. Peggy seemed to understand that the swan was there to help. She stopped struggling and slowly followed the swan as it led her back to the shore. Everyone watching from the beach was amazed. We had never seen anything like it – a swan coming to rescue a dog!
When Peggy finally reached the shallow water, she was very tired but safe. She walked straight to me, shook off all the water, and lay down in the sun. The swan stayed nearby for a few minutes, as if making sure Peggy was okay, before swimming away.
Now, whenever we come to the lake, Peggy stays close to the shore. And sometimes, we see that same swan swimming nearby. It’s like they have a special connection after their amazing adventure together.
